2025 Paul Osicka Riesling
Tasting Note
From Heathcote. About half the wine hangs out in old, larger format barrels, the other bit in stainless. Lees time, no sulphur for a prolonged period, texture sought. It works. Utter charm, proper riesling. Distinct nutty, savoury elements in lime, preserved lemon, dried apple, pickled lime and gingery notes. Amongst that, green almond, cashew nut and touches of sourdough savouriness. It’s got deep flavour and texture, a suppleness, a long finish with dashes of that sourdough and cinnamon spice following. A lavish expression, but with all the hallmarks of great riesling wine, complexity to the fore. Serious, excellent, awesome. It moves riesling to new paradigms and eschews the line and length, acid driven, skeletal styles, and pants them.
Review
"Hand picked, chilled, brief skin contact, pressed, less added back, fermentation in stainless steel and seasoned in large-format French oak, left on yeast lees for several months. Sourced off old vines on the home Majors Creek vineyard, and picked early to retain that deliciously clean and brisk lime-citrus zestiness. Apple blossom aromas, grapefruit, lime cordial, citrus, apple, talc and spice. It all comes together over a creamy texture with a good depth of complex, additional leesy gingernut flavours, touches of preserved lemon tartness and spice. Runs long on racy acidity."
